Explore the impressive beauty of the Volcanic Eifel in three stages: maars, wells and castles await discovery.
You can also travel to Gerolstein, City of Wells, comfortably by train. Here, after a restful night, is the starting point of your walking trip. Condition is now called for, because the trail leads continuously up and down through the gentle hills that characterise the landscape as far as the health resort of Daun. On the second stage, freshly fortified by a rich and varied breakfast, you walk along the three Daun maars, deep-blue, volcanic lakes whose shores positively make you want to stop and stay. Away from roads, the trail now leads through the quiet Liesertal, before climbing to the majestically enthroned castles of Manderscheid. The following day, too, the River Lieser accompanies walkers for part of the way before the Eifelsteig Trail divides and leads through woods that again and again afford views of impressive Eifel highlands, ending at Himmerod Abbey, the end point of the walk. Here, at the conclusion of the trip, a quite special experience awaits you: an overnight stay in a monastery.
“The point of travel is to get to a point; the point of walking is the walk.”
