360 degree walk around GesundLand Vulkaneifel – 5 nights

You make your own way to Daun. The historic little town in the heart of the Volcanic Eifel is best explored by going on an independent, gentle stroll around it.

The trail goes through the valley of the Lieser and over the Firmerich-Berg, past the Schönbacher Mühle (Schönbach mill), across the Üssbach brook and through idyllic woodland to Ulmen. There the Eifel’s youngest maar, which is a mere 11,000 years old, awaits you.

Sights worth seeing along this stretch are the Demerather Mühle (Demerath mill), the Strohner Märchen (Strohn mini-maar (a silted up dry maar)) and the Pulvermaar, once witnesses of volcanic activity! With a depth of over 70 m the Pulvermaar near Gillenfeld is the deepest body of water north of the Alps.

With the mysterious Holzmaar and the silted up Dürre-Maar this stage is also marked by volcanic activity. Also awaiting you is the Mediaeval setting of Manderscheid Castles. After an uphill climb past the Oberburg (upper castle) the day ends with a walk via the Kaisertempelchen lookout hut to Manderscheid.

You walk along the Eifelsteig back to Daun and pass the Maarsattel with a view of the Schalkenmehrener Maar and the Weinfelder Maar. On the Mäuseberg the Dronketurm offers fabulous distant views and an all-round view across the Volcanic Eifel.

On this alternative route back to Daun you walk along the Lieserpfad past Weisersbach, passing the sleepy Gemündener Maar, which enchants by its mysterious atmosphere. At the health resort Daun all kinds of charming refreshment opportunities are offered.
