The Maare-Mosel-Radweg (Maare-Mosel Cycleway) is closed as of now because of major building work in the area of the town of Wittlich (between Wittlich town centre and Wittlich-Wengerohr). A signposted detour has been created.
Today, where big iron horses once steamed and snorted, runs one of Germany’s loveliest cycleways. Here tourist cycling becomes an adventure. Feel the fresh wind on your cheeks and breathe in the crystal-clear air of the Eifel. Enjoy fabulous views. The trail winds gently over nearly level terrain up to unforgettable viewing points. From historic viaducts and uplands you allow your gaze to sweep over the Volcanic Eifel. This easy ride is especially suitable for families and nature lovers.
The gentle uphill runs are followed by flat downhill ones through beech woods. There is a scent of fresh woodland air. The twittering of birds accompanies you on your way past maars and cinder cones. The way runs along the former Daun-Lieser rail trackway. A trip along theMaare-Mosel-Radweg is probably the most adventurous and pleasantest way to explore the landscape between the green Volcanic Eifel and the lovely Mosel.
It starts in Daun. The starting point can be reached without difficulty by car or the RegioRadler biker bus. Anyone wanting to go on a cycling trip can hire a bicycle or an e-bike in Daun. An initial, if small, challenge: the run up to the viaduct that lies 28 metres above the health resort. However, even for untrained riders this stage is easy to manage. The effort is, it goes without saying, rewarded at once with a fabulous view all round. After passing through the Grosses Schlitzohr (the Big Bat Tunnel), one of altogether four tunnels along the stretch, the way runs under the blue Eifel sky on past the Daun maars and other prominent features of the Volcanic Eifel.
