Grab your bikes and have fun exploring the Volcanic Eifel with the whole family! Between Daun and Gillenfeld the Maare-Mosel-Radweg (Maare-Mosel Cycleway) is especially child-friendly: four friends accompany the littlest ones on their cycle trip and tell them exciting things about their environment.
... read moreElli Eule (Elli Owl) is well informed, because she knows everything there is to know about the history of the Eifel. On the Daun Burgberg (Daun Castle Hill), by the Weinfelder Maar and at the Dronketurm (Dronke Tower) the children learn exciting things from Elli. Freddi Fledermaus (Freddy Flittermouse) knows all about flora and fauna. So his haunts are the Daun Wildlife and Adventure Park, the Grosses Schlitzohr Tunnel, where bats feel really at home, the Sangweiher Nature Conservation Area and the Mürmes Nature Conservation Area. Biggi Biene (Biggy Bee) is a honey-bringer and master builder. At a time when bees especially need protection she plays a very important role. From her children learn at the Gemündener Maar, the Grosses Schlitzohr Tunnel (the Big Bat Tunnel) and Senfeld Airport all that should be known about the subject of honey and bees. Willi Basalt (Billy Basalt), an expert on earth history and volcanic activity, completes the quartet. He knows everything there is to know about the history of the earth and volcanic activity. At the Daun maars and at the Eifel Vulkanmuseum he reveals what he knows about the eruptive period of the Volcanic Eifel.
Those who want to travel further can start right at the Kylltal-Radweg (Kylltal Bike Trail) between Bewingen and Densborn. Here, too, Biggi Biene, Elli Eule, Willi Basalt and Freddi Fledermaus accompany the children on their trip through the Eifel. Along the children’s cycleway there are numerous stopping points and play areas that offer young bikers a perfect opportunity to take a break. On this cycleway children can not only work off their energy but also learn all sorts of things about nature and the environment. You can also get to the children’s cycleway on the Maare-Mosel-Radweg from the Mosel by public transport. There the "RegioRadler" (RegioBiker) runs. RegioLine 300 buses commute between Bernkastel-Kues and Daun several times a day.
From May to October there is also an additional bus for bicycle transport. With this you can also get out at Gillenfeld or Schalkenmehren and begin your cycle trip. Advance reservation for bicycles is to be recommended. That can be done conveniently and online, for example, at www.regioradler.de. Locally the tourist information service will be pleased to make the reservation for you.
